COMMON FROGS
09/03/09
Common Frog (Rana temporaria) with frog spawn
During the winter, from mid-October, common frogs hibernate in sheltered places on land or in the muddy bottoms of ponds. They emerge to migrate to breeding ponds, often in January in the south-west but usually in February or March. After spawning frogs usually stay in the water until the weather gets warmer, leaving during April to live on land
I had a great time photographing these frogs, because of the physical size of the pond (about 1 metre across) I was able to shoot almost anywhere I wanted to. Using a 150mm macro lens I could get close to these very obliging amphibians. At one point I had the lens close to the water's edge photographing one frog, then surprisingly when I peered over the top of the camera I saw a small pair of eyes watching me right underneath my lens hood.
